What Is eSIM and How Does It Work?

The term eSIM stands for embedded Subscriber Identity Module. According to Apple’s eSIM support page, an eSIM performs the same function as a physical SIM: it authenticates your phone on a carrier’s network and stores your phone number. The difference is entirely in form factor. A physical SIM is a removable chip you slide into a tray. An eSIM is a reprogrammable chip soldered to the phone’s motherboard that can store multiple carrier profiles simultaneously. The GSMA, the industry body that governs SIM standards, finalized the consumer eSIM specification in 2016, and carrier adoption has accelerated steadily since then.
A physical SIM card is a removable chip that you insert into a tray on your phone. An eSIM is permanently embedded in the phone’s circuitry and cannot be removed. You activate an eSIM by scanning a QR code from your carrier or downloading a profile through the phone’s settings menu. The activation takes between 2 and 15 minutes depending on your carrier.
The practical difference for most people is convenience. Switching carriers on a physical SIM means getting a new card mailed or visiting a store. Switching on eSIM means scanning a new QR code. You can also store multiple eSIM profiles on one phone and switch between them without physically swapping anything. This makes eSIM particularly useful for travelers and people who maintain separate work and personal numbers on a single device.

Most flagship phones released after 2020 support eSIM. Apple was the first major manufacturer to include eSIM in a consumer phone with the iPhone XS in 2018. Google followed with the Pixel 3 the same year. Samsung added eSIM support to the Galaxy S20 series in 2020. The iPhone 14 and later models sold in the United States removed the physical SIM tray entirely, making eSIM the only option.

Activation works through three methods depending on your carrier. The most common is QR code scanning: your carrier provides a QR code (via email, in-store, or on their website) that you scan with your phone’s camera during setup. The second method is carrier app activation, where you download your carrier’s app and activate the eSIM from within it. The third is automatic activation during phone setup, which Apple calls “eSIM Quick Transfer” and Samsung calls “eSIM Transfer.”
On iPhone: go to Settings, then Cellular, then Add eSIM. Choose “Use QR Code” and scan the code your carrier provided. On Android: go to Settings, then Network & Internet, then SIMs, then Add SIM. Select “Download a SIM instead” and scan the QR code. Both processes take under 5 minutes, and your phone connects to the network immediately after activation. Some carriers charge a one-time activation fee (typically $5 to $10), while others activate eSIM for free. When you transfer to a new phone, most carriers let you move the eSIM digitally without needing a new QR code.
International travel is the strongest use case. Instead of buying a local physical SIM at the airport, you can purchase a travel eSIM plan from providers like Airalo, Holafly, or Nomad before you leave home. Prices range from $5 for 1 GB in a single country to $50 for 10 GB across multiple regions. Your home number stays active on the physical SIM (or a second eSIM profile) while the travel eSIM handles local data.
The second major use case is maintaining separate work and personal numbers on one phone. With dual SIM support (one eSIM plus one physical SIM, or two eSIM profiles), you can receive calls and texts on both numbers without carrying two devices. Both iPhone and Samsung Galaxy phones let you assign different numbers to different contacts and choose which line to use for outgoing calls. This also helps with privacy management, since you can give your work number to professional contacts and keep your personal number private.
Carrier support is the biggest limitation. While major carriers in the US (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) and most European carriers support eSIM, many smaller regional carriers and MVNOs (mobile virtual network operators) do not. Before switching to eSIM, verify your specific carrier supports it by checking their website or calling customer service.
Transferring an eSIM between phones is more complex than moving a physical SIM card. With a physical SIM, you pop it out and put it in the new phone. With eSIM, you typically need to contact your carrier or use their app to deactivate the profile on the old phone and reactivate it on the new one. Apple’s eSIM Quick Transfer simplifies this for iPhone-to-iPhone moves, but cross-platform transfers (Android to iPhone or vice versa) usually require carrier involvement. My honest take: if your phone and carrier both support eSIM, there is no practical reason to prefer a physical SIM for your primary line. The convenience of digital activation and the ability to store multiple profiles outweigh the minor complexity of transfers. The one exception is frequent travelers who swap between many local SIMs in countries where eSIM plans are overpriced compared to physical prepaid SIMs. In that specific case, a physical SIM tray still has value.
