Why does your phone get slower over time?
Phones slow down because apps accumulate cached data, background processes multiply, and operating system updates occasionally demand more resources than older hardware provides. Storage that fills past 85% capacity forces the OS to spend cycles managing what stays and what gets swapped, which directly impacts response times.
According to Google’s Android support documentation, low storage is the most common cause of sluggish performance. On iPhone, Apple reports that battery health degradation triggers automatic performance throttling to prevent unexpected shutdowns. Both problems are fixable without replacing the phone.
How do you clear cached data on Android?
Open Settings, tap Storage, then select Cached Data and confirm the clear. This removes temporary files that apps store to load faster, but which accumulate into gigabytes over months. On Samsung devices, the path is Settings, Device Care, Storage, then tap Clean Now.
For individual apps consuming excessive cache, go to Settings, Apps, select the app, then Storage, then Clear Cache. Chrome and social media apps typically cache the most data. According to Google’s storage management guide, clearing app cache does not delete your login data or saved preferences. Repeat this monthly for best results.
How do you free up storage on iPhone without deleting apps?
Enable Offload Unused Apps in Settings, General, iPhone Storage. This removes the app binary but keeps its data, so reinstalling restores your settings. According to Apple’s iPhone storage support page, this feature automatically frees space when storage is low.
Review your photo library next. Settings, Photos, Optimize iPhone Storage keeps only smaller versions on the device while originals stay in iCloud. Clear the Recently Deleted album, which holds deleted photos for 30 days. Check Messages storage under Settings, General, iPhone Storage, then Messages. Large Attachments shows the biggest files in your message history. Clearing old conversation attachments recovers more space than most people expect.
Which background apps should you disable?
On Android, go to Settings, Apps, and sort by battery usage. Any app using significant battery in the background is also consuming CPU cycles. Restrict background activity for social media apps, news aggregators, and shopping apps that refresh content you rarely check.
On iPhone, go to Settings, General, Background App Refresh and disable it for apps you open manually. Weather, email, and navigation apps benefit from background refresh. Social media apps, games, and shopping apps do not. The performance difference is most noticeable on phones older than three years, where every background process competes for limited RAM. This is my strongest recommendation for older phones: disable background refresh for anything you do not need updating silently.
What settings give you the best battery life?
Reduce screen brightness to 50% or enable adaptive brightness. The display is the largest single battery consumer on every phone. According to Android’s power management documentation, the screen accounts for 30-50% of total power draw during active use.
Disable always-on display if your phone has one. Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning under Settings, Location, Scanning. Set the screen timeout to 30 seconds. Enable battery saver or low power mode proactively at 30% rather than waiting for the automatic prompt at 20%. On Samsung devices, reduce the refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz in Settings, Display, Motion Smoothness. Each of these changes individually saves 5-15% battery; combined, they can extend a full charge by two or more hours.

How do you stop apps from running in the background on Android?
Go to Settings, Apps, select an app, then Battery, and choose Restricted. This prevents the app from running in the background entirely. On Samsung, the equivalent is Settings, Battery, Background Usage Limits, and then add apps to the Sleeping or Deep Sleeping lists.
Android also offers Developer Options for power users. Enable it by tapping Build Number seven times in Settings, About Phone. Inside Developer Options, the Running Services screen shows exactly what is consuming RAM at any moment. Do not restrict system services or your phone’s core apps like Phone, Messages, or Settings. Target third-party apps that you open manually and do not need real-time notifications from.
When should you factory reset instead of tweaking settings?
A factory reset is the nuclear option and it works. If your phone remains sluggish after clearing cache, disabling background apps, and freeing storage, a clean reset eliminates accumulated software conflicts that individual fixes cannot reach. Back up your data to Google Drive or iCloud first.
On Android, go to Settings, System, Reset Options, Erase All Data. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Erase All Content and Settings. After reset, reinstall apps one at a time over a few days rather than restoring everything at once. This identifies which app was causing the original problem. Consider a factory reset every 18-24 months for phones older than two years.
